About Afloat Swim

Ensuring Infant Water Safety

At Afloat Swim we use techniques designed to teach infants and young children survival swimming skills. The primary objective of our program is to equip children with the ability to save themselves in water emergencies, particularly in situations where they may unintentionally find themselves in water without supervision. This program addresses a critical safety need, as drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death among children under five.

Our Pool

Our pool offers a perfect solution for those with sensitive skin, thanks to its magnesium-based composition. This unique feature ensures a gentle touch, avoiding the harshness often associated with traditional chlorine pools. To guarantee the highest standards of cleanliness and safety, the water is meticulously sanitized using a combination of UV and ozone treatments. These advanced systems effectively eliminate contaminants while minimizing the use of additional chemicals. Additionally, the pool is heated to a comfortable 32 degrees Celsius, providing a consistently warm and inviting environment for year-round enjoyment.

Core Principles and Techniques

Afloat Swim focuses on teaching infants and toddlers specific survival skills first rather than traditional swimming strokes. The training is customised to the child’s developmental stage and typically includes:

  1. Self-Rescue Skills: Infants as young as six months old are taught to roll onto their backs and float unassisted. This skill allows them to breathe and remain buoyant until help arrives.
  2. Swim-Rest-Swim Sequence: Older infants and toddlers (starting around 12 months) learn to combine swimming with floating. They are trained to swim a short distance, roll onto their back to rest and breathe, and then continue swimming to safety.

Instructional Approach

Afloat Swim’s method is highly individualised, focusing on each child’s unique physical and emotional needs. The training process involves daily one-on-one lessons, typically lasting 10 minutes each, over a period of several weeks. This duration allows for gradual skill acquisition and reinforces muscle memory through consistent practice.

Safety and Effectiveness

The safety of the Afloat Swim program is paramount. Instructors undergo rigorous training and certification, ensuring they are well-versed in child psychology, physiology, and first aid. Lessons are conducted in a controlled environment, and parents are educated about water safety to reinforce practices at home.

Studies and anecdotal evidence support the effectiveness of this type of program. Many parents have reported instances where their children, having completed the survival training, successfully saved themselves from drowning situations. The program’s success is also attributed to its emphasis on continuous reassessment and adaptation of techniques to suit individual learning paces.

Conclusion

Afloat Swim is a pioneering program aimed at reducing the risk of drowning among young children by teaching them essential self-rescue skills. Through a combination of tailored instruction, safety protocols, and parental involvement, Afloat Swim equips infants and toddlers with the ability to survive unexpected water accidents. While it is not without controversy, the program’s life saving potential and emphasis on individual care make it a valuable component of childhood water safety education. As with any safety measure, it should be complemented by vigilant supervision and comprehensive water safety practices.
